Korean Currency: Saimdang, and Other Historical Figures

saimdang50000

Did you know the woman on S. Korean currency 50,000 won bill 오만원 is Shin Saimdang 신사임당?  The ₩50,000 is a larger bill, comparable with the US $50 bill. The person on S. Korean 5,000 Won bill 오천원 is the second son of Saimdang, who in the drama went by Yi Hyun Ryung (이현룡).  This got me to thinking about ALL the people behind S. Korean currency.

As I was preparing to write an article about S. Korean, I came across a great article by Keith Kim over at Seoulistic.com with a great overview on the real historical figures behind S. Korean currency. Seeing as this was exactly the information that I wanted to share, why reinvent an already brilliant wheel? (By the way, thank you Keith allowing me to repost!!)

For those interested in travel to Korea, then Seoulistic.com is a great resource!  Definitely check it out.

The second son of Saimdang, who in the drama went by Yi Hyun Ryung (이현룡) is known in history as Yi Yi (이이). He is also known by the pen name of Yulgok (율곡). Yi Yi went on to become one of the most prominent Confusion scholars in Korean history. Today, he is on the 5,000 won bill.
