Silla Crown

I read on wiki that Princess Sohwa’s existence as one of King Jinpyeong’s daughter is still debatable. is it true? since she’s married to a Baekje’s royal. despite knowing how bad Silla-Baekje relationship…

    • Great question! Let me begin by re-stating that I am not a professional historian – but I’ll do my best to explain the issue. It is generally recognized that King Jinpyeong had three daughters, Sohwa being the third daughter. The story of Princess Sonhwa and King Mu can be found in the Samguk Yusa, which was completed in 1281. The Samguk Yusa was a compilation of oral traditions and folk stories of the Three Kingdom Period. So Princess Sohwa being the daughter of King Jinpyeong isn’t the debate, per se. The debate is really about whether she was the queen of Baekje and the mother of King Uija of Baekje. For the past 1000 years (give or take), it was believed the Princess Sohwa was wife of King Mu and therefore the mother of King Uija of Beakje. King Mu built a monument for his Queen in 639, called Mireuksaji Pagoda (미륵사지석탑). This is now Korea’s oldest and largest pagoda’s still remaining in Korea. It’s went through tons of renovations. Why I bring this up is because in 2009, during an excavation of the Pagado, they found some plates with engravings of prayers. There was a line that said something to the effect of “….Baekje’s queen, Jwapyeong, daughter of Jeonduk…” (…우리 백제 왕후께서는 좌평(佐平) 사택 적덕(沙宅積德)의 따님으로..). So THIS is the center of the debate. This discovery has left the historical community stumped and shattered the foundation of what everyone always believed. It has led SOME historians to question her entire existence. However, from what I’ve been able to gather from “mainstream” Korean historical sources, there doesn’t seem to be any question at she was a Princess from Silla and the daughter of Jinpyeong. Unfortunately at this point, there is no evidence to PROVE or DISPROVE any claims beyond that. Hope this helps! 🙂

BTW – if you haven’t already seen the drama, I highly recommend “The Ballad of Seo Dong” which is about this story.

Thanks for your explanation and information sharing 😉 so the debate is whether she’s the Queen of Baekje… and King Jinpyeong of Silla indeed has 3 daughters (Queen Seondeok, Princess Cheonmyung, and Princess Sohwa)… thanks again ^^
I’ll insert this recommended drama in my list ^_^
